Imam Ibn al-Qayyim has clarified a point of disagreement. He states that reciting Tasmiyah aloud in the audible prayers is a point of difference. However, Imam Ibn al-Qayyim has preferred the view that it should not be recited aloud. Just as in the loud (jahri) prayers it is not recited aloud, similarly in silent prayers it is also not recited aloud.
Imam Ibn al- Qayyim (رحمه الله) indicated regarding the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah behind the Imam that whether the prayer is audible (jahri) or silent (sirri), and whether one is praying individually or as a follower (muqtadi), reciting al-Fatihah is obligatory in all circumstances.
He further elaborated on this in I‘lam al-Muwaqqi‘in, stating:
“Rejecting the clear, explicit, and authentic texts which designate the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah as obligatory.”
He criticized those who reject clear and authentic hadiths by interpreting them in light of ambiguous texts, even though the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah in prayer is obligatory.
According to the authoritative books of Hanafi jurisprudence, the Hanafi position on this issue is as follows:
Reciting Surah al-Fatihah is wajib (necessary) for a person praying individually. If someone does not recite al-Fatihah in prayer, the prayer is still valid, but it will be deficient in performance. Likewise, Hanafi jurists consider the recitation of al-Fatihah behind the Imam to be makruh (disliked)
