Khwaja Muhammad Maʿsūm (RA): A Research Analysis of His Life, Intellectual Background, and Literary Contributions
Abstract
Khwaja Muhammad Maʿsūm (RA), the distinguished successor of Mujaddid Alf Thani (RA), was a pivotal figure in the revival of Islamic thought in the Indian subcontinent. He lived through the reigns of Mughal emperors Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb, playing a significant role in countering religious deviations and re-establishing orthodox Islamic teachings. His intellectual and literary contributions were aimed at purifying Sufism from un-Islamic innovations while emphasizing adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah. His epistles and treatises provide profound insights into Islamic jurisprudence, spirituality, and the reformative role of the Naqshbandi order. This research examines his biographical details, historical and intellectual milieu, and the major themes in his writings. It explores his opposition to Akbar’s religious policies, his role in the religious reformation of his time, and his influence on subsequent generations of scholars and Sufi practitioners. By critically analyzing his works, the study highlights his contribution to the scholarly and spiritual traditions of Islam and his enduring legacy in the field of Islamic revivalism and literature.
