This study addresses one of the rhetorical phenomena, namely the departure from the apparent meaning (khuruj al-kalam, un muqtada al-zahir) which arises from rhetorical motives that deeply influence thought and emotions. It highlights the role of scholars and researchers in uncovering its objectives. By examining Prophetic traditions (ahadith nabawiyya), it becomes evident that when speech departs from the apparent wording, it carries an interpretation and direction that is not immediately understood from the literal expression. This rhetorical shift captures the reader,s attention and motivates them to explore beyond the surface wording in order to uncover the intended meaning that the hadith seeks to convey.
The manifestations of this departure are diverse. They include transforming declarative statements into performative ones, replacing verbs with verbal nouns, expressing the past using the present tense, expressing the future using the past tense, employing predominance (taghilb) between verb forms (past, present, and imperative), andutilizing stylistic shifts such as iltifat (grammatical and rhetorical shift), among other rhetorical devices.
