INTERPRETATIONS OF QURANIC TERMINOLOGIES IN "GHAREEB-UL-QURAN FI LUGHAT-IL-FURQAN" BY MIRZA ABUL FAZL __ A ANALYTICAL STUDY

Abstract

The terms used in the Holy Quran are not only the fundamental pillars of religious understanding, but these words are also symbols that carry the meanings  and  purposes of revelation. In his book "Gharib al-Quran fi Lughat al-Furqan", Mirza Abu al-Fadl has presented an explanation and exegesis of these Quranic terms that has historical and lexical depth in some places, but in other places it deviates from the established exegetical principles, the unanimous position of the majority of scholars and exegetes, and the Quranic context. In his interpretation of these concepts, Mirza Abul-Fadl often ignores traditional beliefs and traditions and defines the meaning on purely rational and literal grounds. For example, he considers "Iblis" to be a metaphorical or psychological force, while he interprets "jinn" as hidden or alien races of humans. He also interprets "angels" as simply natural forces or divine laws, contrary to the prevailing concept of angels. Similarly, they interpret the divine punishment on Abraha (the incident of the elephant companions) as a natural accident or illness, not a miraculous intervention. They also interpret events such as the speech of Jesus as a child as unreal or symbolic. In all these interpretations, his approach is rational and literal, which makes it clear that he believed in understanding religious texts solely in the light of the apparent meanings of words and rational inference.
