This study explores the points of agreement and disagreement among Qur’anic exegetes during the first half of the ninth century AH. It aims to identify the main methodological and thematic features that characterized Qur’anic interpretation in this period.
Using a descriptive and inductive approach, the research analyzes primary tafsir sources to highlight areas of consensus, such as the focus on glosses, linguistic analysis, source diversity, and reduced sectarian bias. It also examines points of divergence, including differences in addressing Qur’anic rulings, surah interrelations, Qur’anic sciences, esoteric interpretation, and thematic tafsir.
The study concludes that while a shared scholarly framework existed among exegetes of this period, notable variations in methodology and content reflected the diverse intellectual and theological backgrounds of the scholars. This research offers a clearer understanding of the development of Qur’anic exegesis during a pivotal phase in Islamic history.
