Abstract

Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (1863-1943) was a prominent Islamic scholar, reformer, and Sufi master who played a pivotal role in the religious and intellectual landscape of the Indian subcontinent. Born in Thana Bhawan, Uttar Pradesh, he received his early education at home and later at Darul Uloom Deoband, where he distinguished himself in various Islamic sciences. After graduation, he dedicated his life to teaching, writing, and spiritual guidance.Known as "Hakeem-ul-Ummat" (Physician of the Ummah) for his profound understanding of the spiritual ailments of his time, Maulana Thanvi authored over a thousand books and treatises on diverse subjects, including Tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), Hadith, Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), Sufism, and ethics. His magnum opus, Bayan-ul-Quran, is a widely respected commentary on the Holy Quran. He emphasized adherence to the Sharia, purification of the soul (Tazkiyah), and the importance of practical implementation of Islamic teachings in daily life. His influence extended far beyond his immediate students, shaping the thoughts and practices of countless Muslims across generations.
