Abstract

This abstract provides a critical analysis of Nawab Mirza Shauq's masnavi "Zahr-e-Ishq," a significant work within 19th-century Urdu poetry known for its realistic portrayal of love and its tragic consequences, often against the backdrop of societal pressures and moral complexities. Unlike the more idealized or overtly autobiographical romantic narratives of his predecessors, Shauq's "Zahr-e-Ishq" delves into the destructive power of illicit passion and unfulfilled desire, specifically focusing on the internal and external conflicts faced by lovers in a restrictive social environment.

The masnavi is characterized by its frank and vivid depiction of emotional turmoil and physical longing, a hallmark of Shauq's unique poetic voice. This analysis examines how Shauq employs a narrative structure that builds tension through the lovers' clandestine meetings and their growing despair, ultimately leading to a sorrowful, often fatal, climax. We explore the psychological depth attributed to the characters, whose actions are driven by intense emotions rather than mere archetypal roles.

Furthermore, the study investigates the societal critique implicitly embedded within the masnavi. Shauq's work often reflects on the hypocrisy and rigid social codes of his time, which frequently condemned passionate love that transcended prescribed boundaries. The "poison" in "Zahr-e-Ishq" can thus be interpreted as not just unrequited love itself, but also the toxic influence of societal norms and the impossibility of true emotional freedom for individuals caught in their grip.

In essence, Nawab Mirza Shauq's "Zahr-e-Ishq" stands as a powerful and sometimes unsettling exploration of human relationships, offering a gritty realism that sets it apart. It serves as a crucial document for understanding 19th-century emotional landscapes and the poetic expression of forbidden love, firmly establishing its place in the evolution of Urdu masnavi tradition.
