Imam Ibn Taymiyyah’s Methodology and Style in the Critique of Christianity: An Analytical Study

Abstract

During the era of Harun and Ma'mun, when Greek philosophical books were translated into Arabic, Greek philosophical ideas gained ground in the Islamic world, and soon supporters of these ideas emerged in the Ummah, and the center of these ideas, the Mu'tazilah sect, emerged, which turned the straightforward and simple discussions of the Sharia into a battleground with philosophical distortions. And after that, this series continued and sects with different ideas came into existence. Some of these sects were so powerful and energetic in their magic tricks that even the rulers of the Ummah could not escape and were left behind. This is the reason why we see these false sects sitting in the lap of the caliphate in history. A whole group of true scholars strived to defend the truth, and they not only rejected false doctrines with knowledge and research, but also gave a resounding response to false religions. The great knight of this line of Dhahbiyyah was Allama Ibn Taymiyyah, who, at a time when false religions were surrounding Islam externally and the body of the Muslim Ummah internally was being wounded by the deviant sects with their intellectual slanders, and the Muslims were at their wits' end on the military and intellectual fronts, the theological sects were talking nonsense in that era, and the tongues of true scholars were being suppressed by force. The freedom of pen and paper had become a sight of hindrances. In these different circumstances, the emergence of an all-encompassing and brilliant scholar like Allama Ibn Taymiyyah on the scene became a means of supporting the faltering intellectual movement of the Ummah. The era of Allama Ibn Taymiyyah was an era of false religions and various misguided sects, in which a genius like Allama Ibn Taymiyyah was needed who could curb these growing temptations in their language. And it happened that Allama Ibn Taymiyyah, with his knowledge and insight, showed the essence of knowledge and courage on all these fronts and especially using the pen as his weapon, came into the field of action and fought all these temptations with the style of knowledge of debate and raised his pen against them
