Allah Almighty sent prophets and messengers for the guidance of humankind. Their mission was to teach communities the Book and wisdom and to purify their souls; this was the very purpose of prophetic mission, as stated in the Holy Qur’an. The concept of purification of the soul (tazkiyah), alongside the teaching of the Book and wisdom, is known in the present age as Tasawwuf (Sufism). In reality, it represents spiritual purification and the station of ihsān. For the attainment of this objective, from the earliest generations to later times, pious scholars and spiritual masters have consistently adopted and upheld the path of Sufism. The majority of scholars and saints of the Muslim Ummah in every era have regarded adherence to the spiritual path (ṭarīqah) as essential.
