Abstract

The prohibition of interest (riba) represents one of the most profound and uncompromising injunctions in the Shariah, designed to safeguard economic justice, moral equilibrium, and the spiritual integrity of human society. This analytical study examines the demands of the Shariah regarding the prohibition of riba and the regulation of personal behaviors, situating them within the broader discourse of social development in contemporary Muslim societies. The research posits that the Shariah’s command to eliminate interest is not merely an economic directive but an all-encompassing ethical, social, and psychological reform, aimed at establishing a moral foundation for collective welfare and distributive justice. Through a critical analysis of Qur’anic injunctions, Prophetic traditions, juristic interpretations, and modern socio-economic realities, the study reveals that the prohibition of interest functions as both a spiritual safeguard against greed and an institutional mechanism for equitable wealth circulation. Therefore, the prohibition of interest is both a moral command and a developmental strategy. It is designed to restore balance between material and spiritual life, between individual and society, and between wealth and justice. Its realization in the modern world requires not only legislative measures and financial restructuring but also a profound renewal of human consciousness. When individuals internalize the ethical vision of the Shariah recognizing wealth as a trust, trade as service, and profit as responsibility,  the dream of an equitable, interest-free society becomes a tangible reality. Such a society, rooted in taqwa, compassion, and cooperation, embodies the very essence of Islamic social development: a civilization that harmonizes faith with justice, and prosperity with moral integrity.
