Disagreement, in both its literal and technical sense, has played a pivotal role in the intellectual and social development of Muslim society. From the era of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the Successors, differences of opinion were not merely tolerated but often regarded as a sign of intellectual vitality and diversity of understanding. This paper explores the meaning and scope of disagreement, offering examples from the early Islamic period to show how such differences emerged, the causes that shaped them, and the strategies employed by the early generations to manage them while maintaining mutual respect and unity. It highlights how these disagreements were rooted not in hostility or division, but in sincere efforts to comprehend and apply the Qur’an and Sunnah in varying contexts. Moving to the contemporary era, the article examines the nature of present-day disagreements, identifying both positive and negative aspects, and reflecting on how the manners of disagreement can be applied in today’s pluralistic and globalized society. The study emphasizes that while differences of opinion are inevitable, their management through principles of respect, tolerance, and scholarly dialogue remains critical for the unity of the Muslim Ummah. By analyzing both classical and contemporary perspectives, the research not only clarifies the essence of disagreement but also offers practical guidelines and solutions for cultivating constructive dialogue. Finally, the paper presents conclusions, recommendations, and a comprehensive list of sources for further scholarly engagement.
