Abstract

Translations of the Holy Quran in various styles have expanded and developed the linguistic and cultural capital of the Urdu language. The influence of English and eloquence on the Holy Quran has elevated the cultural level of the Urdu language to the heights. Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlvi has mentioned four types of styles regarding Urdu translations and he has also written a treatise in Persian on this subject titled Al-Muqaddamat fi Qaanimat Tarmata. According to him, the following styles have been adopted: Academic translation, literal translation or literal translation, in which the translation of every word and verse of the Holy Quran is listed below it. These translations are not coherent and idiomatic, due to which the message of the Quran does not reach the reader with its full power. However, it is worth mentioning that through literal translation, the ability to directly understand the Quran is developed. Literary or idiomatic translation, in this style, communication gains real importance. And the effort to convey the message of the Holy Quran in Urdu with this emphasis is effective. Among the well-known Urdu translations, Shah Rafiuddin's translation is literal, while Shah Abdul Qadir's translation is idiomatic. Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi has also described four styles of translation: literal translation, grammatical translation, stylistic translation, and imaginative translation. Stylistic translation refers to idiomatic translation, and imaginative translation refers to keeping the original idea in mind and not restricting words.
