Abstract

Plagiarism, often defined as the unauthorized appropriation of another's intellectual work, has emerged as a critical challenge in academic and scholarly circles worldwide. While much has been discussed about it in the context of Western academic standards, this paper attempts to analyze the phenomenon through the lens of Islamic intellectual tradition and ethics. Drawing upon the Qur’ān, Hadith, classical Fiqh, and the works of renowned Muslim scholars, this study investigates how the Islamic worldview conceptualizes intellectual honesty, originality, and the sanctity of scholarly work.

The paper critically examines the principles of amānah (trust), ḥuqūq al-‘ibād (rights of others), and taḥqīq (authentic research) in relation to plagiarism. It also explores historical precedents where Muslim scholars meticulously cited earlier authorities and condemned the appropriation of ideas without due attribution. Furthermore, this research engages with contemporary Islamic scholars' fatāwā and academic policies regarding plagiarism in universities of the Muslim world.

Ultimately, this article argues that plagiarism in Islamic scholarship is not merely an academic violation but a breach of moral trust and spiritual integrity. It calls for the reassertion of classical Islamic values in modern research institutions and advocates for the development of indigenous Islamic research ethics rooted in the Qur’anic worldview.
