In the contemporary digital age, the concept of pranks—commonly known as practical jokes—has gained significant popularity, especially through social media platforms and public entertainment. While pranks are often presented as harmless fun, many times they cross ethical and moral boundaries, resulting in psychological distress, humiliation, or even physical harm to the individuals targeted. This research aims to explore the reality, different forms, and Islamic rulings regarding pranks in light of the Qur’ān, Sunnah, and scholarly discourse. The study investigates various categories of pranks prevalent in today’s society, such as social media pranks, public stunts, and prank-based content creation. Drawing upon examples from the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions, the research highlights that while humor and light-heartedness are allowed in Islam, they are subject to strict ethical guidelines that preserve human dignity, truthfulness, and emotional safety. The paper identifies boundaries that distinguish between permissible and impermissible pranking. Key criteria include avoiding falsehood, public embarrassment, physical harm, and emotional abuse. The study emphasizes that pranks intended for genuine amusement, without violating Shariah principles or human decency, may be acceptable. However, most modern pranks often disregard these boundaries. This analytical research provides a framework to understand how Islamic ethics can guide contemporary entertainment practices, particularly those involving humor, and calls for responsible behavior that aligns with both moral standards and Islamic teachings.
