Abstract

Khushwant Singh (1915-2014) was a prominent writer, historian, journalist and politician of the 20th century, known for his bold writings and secular views. His novel “Delhi” is a story of the city of Delhi spanning several centuries that travels between the past and the present. It describes in detail the historical events of Delhi, the Sultans of Delhi, the Mughal era, the Sikhs, the British, independence and riots. Khushwant Singh has written this novel in the technique of historical narrative and this technique takes a complex and multifaceted approach in the novel. The author of the novel does not just write historical events sequentially but presents history as a living and breathing reality that also includes fictional elements. The novel “Delhi” is not just a story but is a historical document, which covers the history, culture and social life of the city of Delhi spanning centuries. It contains various situations of the Delhi Sultanate, the history of the Khiljis, Tughlaqs and the Mughals, the British Empire and the events of the Partition of India. This novel describes the historical, cultural, and social aspects of the city of Delhi. In the novel, Delhi is presented not just as a city, location, or place, but as a living civilization. Khushwant Singh has introduced a new technique of historical narrative in this novel by integrating historical events and personalities into the story. This article examines the technique of historical narrative.
