Dr. Yāsīn Maẓhar Ṣiddīqī’s Contributions to Sīrah Scholarship in Pakistan: A Critical and Analytical Study
Abstract
Dr. Muḥammad Yāsīn Maẓhar Ṣiddīqī (raḥimahu-llāh) was one of the most distinguished Sīrah scholars of the Indian subcontinent in the contemporary era. Although based in India, his deep academic and intellectual relationship with Pakistani institutions remained significant throughout his career. Dr. Ṣiddīqī began his academic journey in the field of history, authoring in English, but eventually devoted himself to the study and writing of the Prophet Muḥammad’s (PBUH) biography in Urdu, influenced by the guidance of his father and mentor. His approach to Sīrah writing was unique in its thematic depth, methodological novelty, and analytical precision. He explored multifaceted dimensions of the Prophet’s (PBUH) life — social, economic, political, historical, and practical — with scholarly rigor. This article highlights the special relationship Dr. Ṣiddīqī held with Pakistani academic circles through his published works in prominent Pakistani research journals, participation in national Sīrah conferences, and his extension lectures at Pakistani universities. Furthermore, the study also reviews various MPhil and PhD dissertations in Pakistan that were inspired by or based on his works. The effort aims to consolidate his contributions in a systematic manner to make them accessible to students, teachers, and researchers interested in Sīrah studies. His writing style, marked by clarity, evidence-based reasoning, and critical engagement, offers a distinctive model for future Islamic scholarship. This research, therefore, serves as a valuable resource for understanding his legacy and paving the way for future thematic studies in the field of Sīrah literature.
