Abstract

The emergence of modernism after the progressive movement significantly transformed Urdu fiction, introducing new themes and narrative techniques. A key development in this period was the use of symbolism, which became a central feature in the storytelling process. Symbolism allows for deeper layers of meaning beyond literal representations, enriching the narrative and providing space for varied interpretations. In Urdu fiction, symbols were used to explore complex emotional, psychological, and social issues, allowing writers to communicate nuances of human experience subtly and effectively. Rather than focusing on direct and simplistic representations, symbols in these stories invited readers to engage in a more reflective and interpretative reading, offering multiple meanings depending on the context. This paper offers a critical analysis of how the aesthetic beauty and significance of Urdu short stories were reshaped through symbolism, analyzing its impact on the narrative structure. The study explores how symbols helped break away from traditional storytelling techniques, adding depth and complexity. Through the use of symbolism, the modern Urdu short story not only expanded its thematic range but also provided a means for subtle critiques of societal norms and individual consciousness. In this way, symbolism became a powerful tool in reshaping the narrative and thematic fabric of Urdu fiction.
