The belief in the appearance of al-Mahdi is established by mutawatir hadith and the consensus of muhaddithun. Ibn Khaldun and some later scholars objected on three grounds: preferring al-jarh over al-ta‘dīl, the lack of explicit mention in the Ṣiḥāḥ al-Sittah, and the absence of the term “al-Mahdi” in some narrations. The study shows that al-ta‘dīl takes precedence when supported by multiple chains and reliable narrators, and that al-Bukhārī and Muslim themselves stated their books do not include all authentic hadith. Narrations on al-Mahdi number in the hundreds, with more than thirty mentioning him by name. The conclusion is that the deniers’ objections stem from methodological misunderstandings. The doctrine of al-Mahdi’s appearance rests on sound texts and scholarly consensus, and is therefore an established tenet of belief.
