Maulānā Muḥammad Idrīs Kāndhlawī (R.A): A Research-Based and Analytical Study of His Life, Works, and Religious-Intellectual Contributions

Abstract

This research paper presents a comprehensive analytical study of the life, works, and scholarly contributions of Maulānā Muḥammad Idrīs Kāndhlawī (1899–1974), a distinguished scholar, theologian, and exegete of the twentieth century. His remarkable devotion to the service of Islam, both as a teacher and author, reflects his deep understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Born in Bhopal and belonging to the spiritually rich soil of Kāndhla, Maulānā Kāndhlawī received his early education under the supervision of eminent scholars such as Maulānā Ashraf ʿAlī Thānvī and later graduated from the renowned Islamic institutions of Mazāhir al-ʿUlūm and Dār al-ʿUlūm Deoband. His scholarly output includes the celebrated “Tafsīr Maʿārif al-Qurʾān,” “Sīrat al-Muṣṭafā,” and many other valuable works that continue to guide scholars and students alike. His writings combine a mastery of classical Islamic sciences with practical guidance for contemporary Muslims. Through his teaching, preaching, and writings, Maulānā Kāndhlawī not only contributed to the preservation of traditional Islamic scholarship but also inspired a revival of Qur’anic understanding and moral reform in the Muslim community. This paper analyzes his intellectual legacy, focusing on his exegetical methodology, his role in religious education, and his impact on later scholars. The study concludes that Maulānā Kāndhlawī stands as a bridge between classical Islamic scholarship and modern intellectual discourse, leaving behind an enduring legacy of knowledge, piety, and service to Islam.
