Environment and Literature For the past few decades, the issue of environment has been highlighted with serious intensity before mankind. Due to human activities, irreparable damage is being caused to the air, atmosphere and land. The sea, rivers, lakes, glaciers and streams are also being affected by this damage, as are birds, trees and other living beings. Literature and the environment have an ancient relationship. Nature and its phenomena are often described in prose and poetry. Poets and writers have not only described nature and the environment in their works, but have also written odes to its beauty. Now the same nature itself is being wounded by man. Man's industrial development has caused severe damage to nature and the environment. While every human being is worried about the deteriorating environment, pollution and emission of toxic gases, poets, writers and artists also seem to be worried. Even apart from personal references, writers have a romance with nature. Scientific progress is destroying this romance. Continuing to develop and ensuring the protection of the environment seem to be two seemingly contradictory issues. Some scientists have warned that the rate at which harmful chemical compounds and gases are being released will definitely poison the earth and the environment. It is possible that one day this earth will not be able to safely inhabit humans and other living beings. In one of her books, the famous Indian writer Arundhati Roy called the indiscriminate use of mineral resources, damming of rivers and setting up of rampant industries as human-killing measures.
Today's poets and writers also have the duty to use their pen for environmental protection. In relation to Urdu literature, a school called environmental criticism has come into existence in many literatures. Many universities have written articles on the environment and literature. We find many Urdu poets and writers who delve into this subject. Some poems have also been written that raise awareness and consciousness about the environment among children and adults. However, we need to take many steps in this direction. This article focusses on the relationship of Literature and Environment as well.
