Existentialism is a philosophical movement that emphasizes individual freedom and choice. It posits that humans must take responsibility for their own existence, creating their own meaning in life without relying on external factors like tradition, authority or inherent purpose.The main points of existentialism are: 1). Individuals exist first, then define themselves. 2). Humans have the ability to choose and create their own path. 3). Individuals are accountable for their choices. 4). Existentialism stresses on subjectivity i.e. meaning is personal and subjective.
The main preachers and thinkers of existentialism theory are: Jean Paul Sartre, Martin Heidegger and Albert Camus etc. Existentialism influenced various fields, including philosophy, psychology art and literature. Existentialism encourages individuals to confront the human condition and take ownership of their lives.
Abdullah Husain was a prominent Pakistani Urdu fiction writer. He deeply studied the western literature and was influenced by the contemporary literature movements especially by Existentialism movement. Existentialism’s thoughts can be observed throughout his novels and short stories. In this article his short story (Naddi) is studied from existentialism point of view and thoughts regarding existentialism are described.
