The Pre-Prophetic Life Events of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): A Scholarly Analysis of Maulana Muhammad Idrees Kandhlawi’s Contributions

Abstract

This research paper examines the pre-prophetic life events of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as analyzed by the renowned Islamic scholar, Maulana Muhammad Idrees Kandhlawi (RA). The study aims to highlight Kandhlawi’s scholarly approach, methodology, and his contribution to the discipline of Seerah literature. Maulana Kandhlawi, born in Bhopal and later associated with Kandhla, belonged to a distinguished family of Huffaz and scholars. Having memorized the Holy Qur’an at the age of nine, he pursued his initial studies under the guidance of eminent scholars at Madrasa Ashrafia, followed by higher education at Madrasa Mazahirul Uloom Saharanpur, where he studied under notable teachers such as Maulana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri. He completed his Hadith studies in 1917 and earned his sanad of graduation. In his magnum opus Seerat al-Mustafa and other works, Kandhlawi systematically explored the events of the Prophet’s life before Prophethood, including his noble lineage, pure upbringing, moral conduct, and spiritual preparedness for the divine mission. This paper presents a critical analysis of Kandhlawi’s Seerah narrative, showing how he balanced traditional Islamic sources with a scholarly and contextual understanding. By doing so, the research underscores Kandhlawi’s unique role in bridging classical and modern approaches to Seerah writing. The study further emphasizes the significance of examining pre-prophetic events as a foundation for understanding the Prophet’s divine mission and character.
