Abstract

Housing is not merely a physical necessity but a profound reflection of cultural values, personal identity, and spiritual inclinations. In the modern world, residential spaces have become expressions of individual personality, social status, and cultural identity—often assessed through aesthetics, design, smart facilities, and privacy. These trends, though seemingly technical, are deeply rooted in psychological and sociological phenomena such as ego projection and material aspiration. However, such developments may foster vanity and consumerism, contrary to the spiritual and ethical values promoted in Islam. Islam advocates a balanced lifestyle, addressing both material and spiritual needs. The Qur'an refers to homes as a source of sakan—a place of peace and contentment. The Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) residence was modest yet dignified, focused on inner harmony rather than outward luxury. This study explores contemporary residential trends through the lens of the Prophetic lifestyle (Shamā'il-e-Nabawiyyah), analyzing whether modern housing aligns with Islamic principles. It also seeks to draw insights for urban planners, the middle class, and intellectuals from the Prophet’s example. This chapter will critically examine how modern housing reflects and shapes individual values, and what lessons Islamic teachings offer for creating homes that are both functional and spiritually fulfilling..
