This article examines the significant role of media in social reform, emphasizing the need to align its use with Islamic principles for intellectual and moral development. It argues that true social reform requires a media-led conscious effort to distinguish right from wrong, fostering an environment where individuals and society can collectively rectify their ways according to the Quran and Sunnah. The article critiques the current state of media, especially in Muslim societies, for its role in promoting negative trends that have eroded Islamic identity and social values. It highlights how modern media, including social media, has become a tool for psychological warfare, propagating ideas that undermine traditional family systems and promote moral decay, leading to societal fragmentation and intolerance. The author points out that Western media has been particularly effective in using social platforms to foster a sense of inferiority among Muslims regarding their own culture and traditions. The text further delves into specific negative effects of media, as viewed through an Islamic lens. It addresses issues like the prevalence of lies, deception, and fraud on social media, often through fake profiles and the spread of unverified information. Such actions are condemned as major sins in Islam, equating those who engage in them with hypocrites. The article also discusses how media contributes to disrespect towards parents by consuming children's time and attention, leading to defiance when parents attempt to set boundaries.
Moreover, the article criticizes the unrestrained sharing of information without verification, a practice that goes against Islamic teachings which mandate careful investigation of news to prevent causing harm to others. It warns against spreading falsehoods, especially those attributed to religious figures or presented as "acts of charity," as such actions can lead to religious innovations and misguidance.
Finally, the article touches on media’s role in promoting illicit relationships, obscenity, and blasphemy, all of which are strictly forbidden in Islam. It condemns media's portrayal of immodesty and the promotion of Western cultural norms, which it argues have corrupted Muslim women's dress and behavior. It concludes that media, like any tool, is neutral, but its misuse has led to severe moral and social degradation in Muslim societies, undermining modesty, promoting materialism, and inciting intolerance and conflict
