Nazir Ahmed is the first and greatest novelist of Urdu. He started writing novels after the War of Independence of 1857. This was a period when the individual of the subcontinent was in chaos in every respect. Political, social, economic and cultural problems made the life of the individual unbearable. In addition, the cunning and ruthlessness of the colonial government were making it impossible for the individual to live. Although the purpose of Marrat-ul-Arus was something else, Nazir Ahmed has pointed out the problems of that era between the lines. In this novel, we find problems like lack of education, cultural conflict, class conflict, modernity, rationalism and superstition, which he not only pointed out but also gave their solutions. Key words: Novel, Modernity, Rationalism, Politics, Economy, Civilization۔
