Mohammad Hijazi (Moti‟-ud-Dawlah) (1901–1974) was a pioneering figure in modern
Persian literature, renowned for his contributions as a novelist, playwright, journalist,
translator, and political figure. Born in Tehran and educated in France, Hijazi blended
Western literary techniques with traditional Persian themes. His works are notable for
their realistic portrayal of Iranian society, particularly the evolving role of women,
moral dilemmas, and the tension between tradition and modernity.Hijazi's major novels,
including Homa (1928), Pari-cher (1929), Ziba (1930), and Parwana (1953), explore
complex emotional and social dynamics, often through female protagonists. His short
story collections such as Ayeneh (1933), Andisheh (1940), Saghar (1941), and Ahang
(1951) reveal a philosophical and ethical depth, while his plays reflect his mastery in
character development and dramatic structure.Admired both in Iran and internationally,
his writings have been translated into English, French, Russian, Arabic, and Urdu.
Critics have compared him to Addison and Steele of English literature. Hijazi‟s literary
style is celebrated for its poetic prose, emotional intensity, and insightful critique of
bourgeois society. His legacy remains influential in the development of Persian fiction
and socio-political discourse in Iran.
