Syed Abul A'la Maududi: An Analytical Study of His Biography, Thought, and Scholarly-Activist Contributions

Abstract

Syed Abul A'la Maududi (1903–1979) was a prominent Islamic thinker, scholar, and reformer of the 20th century, whose intellectual and ideological legacy continues to influence Islamic movements worldwide. This research presents an analytical study of Maududi's life, his religious and intellectual background, and the multifaceted nature of his services in the fields of scholarship, politics, and Islamic revival. Drawing from biographical data, textual analysis, and historical context, the study explores the evolution of Maududi's thought, his unique literary style, and his foundational role in establishing Jamaat-e-Islami, one of the most significant Islamic movements in South Asia. The paper also highlights the sociopolitical conditions of colonial and post-colonial India and Pakistan that shaped Maududi's discourse. Particular attention is paid to his interpretative work Tafhim al-Qur'an, his critique of Western secular ideologies, and his vision of an Islamic state governed by Shari'ah. Maududi's contributions are examined not only through his writings but also through his transformative impact on Islamic activism and political thought in the Muslim world. This study concludes that Maududi's synthesis of intellectual rigor and practical activism provided a comprehensive framework for Islamic revivalism in the modern era. His legacy continues to serve as a reference point for contemporary scholars and movements striving to articulate Islam's relevance in the modern world.
