Abstract

This article explores the enigmatic character of Mai Sarwari in Abdullah Hussain’s novel Qaid and examines her symbolic and thematic significance within the narrative. Mai Sarwari is presented as a mysterious and saintly figure whose existence is surrounded by silence, isolation, and spiritual ambiguity. The study analyzes how the novelist constructs an aura of mystery around her and how this mystery contributes to the atmosphere of fear, wonder, and metaphysical experience in the novel. It also investigates the relationship between Mai Sarwari’s character and the tragic episode of Raziya Sultana, highlighting themes of love, misfortune, collective guilt, and emotional barrenness. The article further discusses various critical interpretations of Mai Sarwari, including psychological and symbolic readings, and evaluates the contradictions embedded in her characterization. Special attention is given to her transformation at the end of the novel, which symbolizes the end of stagnation and the emergence of a new era marked by the revival of life and love. The study concludes that Mai Sarwari is not merely a mysterious character but a powerful symbolic presence through which Abdullah Hussain explores human emotions, superstition, suffering, and the possibility of renewal.
