Abstract

This comparative study examined how executive skills, emotional regulation, and social competence are related among orphaned and family-raised adolescents in Pakistan. A total of 300 adolescents participated in the study, with 150 individuals in each group. Data were collected using self-report instruments, including the Executive Skills Questionnaire-Revised, the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-Short, and the Social Competence Scale for Adolescents. The results of the mediation analysis showed that emotional regulation significantly and positively predicts social competence. It also plays an important mediating role in the relationship between executive skills and social development. Interestingly, no significant difference was found in the level of social competence between orphaned and family-raised adolescents. These findings indicate that emotional regulation serves as a common pathway influencing social competence, regardless of adolescents’ living conditions. The study highlights the importance of promoting emotional regulation skills to improve social outcomes among adolescents across different environments.
