Abstract

This study offers a systematic analysis of the educational and training principles presented by Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali and their strong alignment with the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad . Imam al-Ghazali, a central figure in Islamic intellectual history, developed a holistic framework integrating knowledge, ethics, spirituality, and moral development, particularly in works such as Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din, Kimiya-e Sa‘adat, Minhaj al-‘Abidin, and Mizan al-‘Amal.The research argues that al-Ghazali’s pedagogical theories are not merely abstract or philosophical but are deeply rooted in the lived example of the Prophet . In his view, knowledge is only meaningful when it leads to the recognition of Allah, moral refinement, and practical transformation. Knowledge that remains purely intellectual or serves worldly purposes alone is considered deficient.

Key educational principles highlighted include sincerity of intention (ikhlas), distinguishing beneficial from non-beneficial knowledge, gradual and comprehension-based teaching, habit formation, and the influence of environment and companionship. The study also emphasizes the mutual rights and responsibilities of teachers and learners. All these principles are shown to reflect the Prophet’s method of teaching, characterized by wisdom, compassion, simplicity, and practical demonstration.In terms of moral and spiritual training, al-Ghazali’s focus on purification of the soul (tazkiyah al-nafs), ethical discipline, and inner reform closely mirrors the Prophetic model. The Seerah provides a comprehensive guide for both individual and societal development, which is echoed in al-Ghazali’s thought.The study concludes that al-Ghazali’s educational philosophy is essentially an extension of the Prophetic Seerah, offering a balanced and holistic model relevant to contemporary educational challenges.
