THE RELEVANCE OF THE PROPHETIC BIOGRAPHY (SEERAH OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD ﷺ) IN PROMOTING INTERFAITH HARMONY IN THE CONTEMPORARY ERA

Abstract

This research study provides a comprehensive analysis of the relevance and applicability of the Prophetic biography (Seerat-un-Nabi ﷺ) in promoting interfaith harmony in the contemporary world. The current global scenario is marked by religious conflicts, extremism, Islamophobia, sectarian clashes, and cultural biases, which have contributed to social insecurity, distrust, and tension. In this context, the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ offers practical, ethical, and theoretical guidance, which not only establishes a strong foundation for interfaith relations but also serves as a practical model for contemporary legal, social, and international frameworks.The study first examines the concept of interfaith harmony and its modern context, highlighting the nature of religious diversity, intellectual, political, and social causes of religious conflicts, and the necessity and significance of interfaith dialogue. It then explores religious pluralism in Islamic thought and the principles of tolerance, justice, common humanity, religious freedom, and sanctity of conscience in light of the Quran and Sunnah.Practical examples of interfaith interactions during the Prophetic era constitute a crucial part of this study, including the Constitution of Medina (Mithaq-e-Madina), treaties with Jews and Christians, ethical and diplomatic conduct with the polytheists of Makkah, protection of life and property, safeguarding places of worship, and adherence to agreements. These actions demonstrate that the Prophet ﷺ implemented the principles of ethics, justice, forgiveness, benevolence, eloquence, and dialogue in practice, which are essential pillars for building trust, respect, and sustainable peace in interfaith relations.In the contemporary local and global context, the study also examines the challenges of Islamophobia, religious extremism, global religious conflicts, minority rights, educational curricula, media, and the role of religious leadership. The analysis reveals that the principles of the Seerah provide effective guidance for modern social and legal systems. For instance, integrating the Seerah into educational curricula fosters interfaith respect, tolerance, and dialogue skills among students, while religious leadership and media can promote ethics, forgiveness, and justice.

The study concludes that the principles embedded in the Seerah are not only historically significant but also practically relevant in the modern era. Principles of justice, wisdom, ethics, adherence to agreements, forgiveness, and human dignity provide a robust and authentic model for promoting interfaith harmony, global peace, social cohesion, and sustainable resolution of religious differences.The Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ offers not only theoretical guidance but also practical and actionable exemplars, which are replicable in contemporary educational, social, legal, and international systems to promote interfaith dialogue and peace. These principles play a crucial role in establishing interfaith harmony, resolving conflicts sustainably, and ensuring global peace.
