Abstract

Sufism is an important and ancient branch of Islamic sciences, aimed at the purification of the soul, moral reform, and attaining closeness to Allah. In the curricula of religious seminaries (Madaris), Sufism is generally taught through classical sources such as Ihya Ulum al-Din, Kashf al-Mahjub, Risala al-Qushayriyyah, and other ethical and spiritual texts. This review indicates that in Madaris, Sufism is primarily presented as a system of ethics and inner spiritual reform. However, its teaching often lacks critical thinking, engagement with contemporary needs, and rigorous academic analysis. In some cases, Sufism is narrowly confined to discussions of miracles, spiritual exercises, and the relationship between the spiritual guide and disciple, which overshadows its original Qur’anic and Prophetic foundations.Furthermore, in the face of modern intellectual challenges such as materialism, atheism, moral decline, and psychological confusion among youth, the reformative, balanced, and practical dimensions of Sufism are not effectively integrated into the curriculum. Although Madaris emphasize that Sufism operates under the framework of Shariah, there remains a noticeable lack of research depth and contemporary application in its pedagogical approach.
