Rumi’s name needs no introduction in today’s world, and the Masnavi-Manavi is one of the most widely read books across the globe, enjoying equal popularity in both the East and the West. Whether the aim is to relish poetry or to seek moral counsel and spiritual insight, readers continually return to it. It is for this reason that the number of editions is exceptionally large. In this context, it is certainly a matter of scholarly interest to examine what kinds of textual variations have entered different editions over the passage of time. This article consists of a comparative analysis of the first twenty-one couplets of the Masnavi Ma‘navi based on eleven printed editions published in different periods and locations.
