Abstract

This research article presents a comparative and analytical study of two monumental works in Urdu literary historiography: Urdu Adab Ki Mukhtasir Tareen Tareekh by Dr. Saleem Akhtar and Urdu Adab Ki Tanqeedi Tareekh by Syed Ehtisham Hussain. Literary history is not merely a chronological record of events but a profound inquiry into the cultural evolution and creative impulses of a society. The study explores how these two historians utilized distinct ideological and stylistic frameworks to interpret the journey of Urdu literature. Dr. Saleem Akhtar’s approach is characterized by psychological depth, metaphorical prose, and an emphasis on the Zeitgeist (spirit of the age). He views literature as an extension of the creator’s subconscious and a reaction against the "destructive nature of time." In contrast, Syed Ehtisham Hussain adopts a sociological and balanced narrative, largely influenced by dialectical materialism, framing literature as a product of social necessity and class struggle. The article compares their views on the origins of the Urdu language, the traditional division of the Delhi and Lucknow schools of poetry, and the creative evolution of various genres. Furthermore, it addresses the scholarly debates surrounding factual accuracy—specifically the issue of historical dates in Hussain’s work as noted by critics like Dr. Gyan Chand Jain—and the journalistic shabbiness sometimes attributed to Akhtar. Ultimately, the research concludes that while their methodologies differ, both works remain indispensable academic resources that provide a holistic understanding of the Urdu literary tradition, bridging the gap between internal psychological motives and external social changes.
