The Holy Qur’an is a miraculous discourse due to its eloquence of language, clarity of expression, excellence of meanings, beauty of themes, finest composition, and supreme coherence. Despite the diversity of subjects, meanings, and purposes, there exists a perfect order and interconnection among the Qur’anic verses and chapters. For this reason, the commentators not only acknowledge the coherence and structure of the Qur’an but have also discussed it in their commentaries in various styles and approaches. Among these commentators, Maulana Hussain Ali Alwani (رح) is a prominent name. He possessed a remarkable aptitude for identifying the coherence, interrelation, and summarization of the Surahs. In his dictational commentary Balaghat al-Hayran fi Rabt Ayat al-Furqan, he presented an extensive and profound discussion on the interconnection and proportionality of the Surahs from Surah al-Fatihah to Surah an-Nas. This research paper attempts to highlight Maulana Hussain Ali Alwani’s style in explaining the coherence of the Qur’an. The approach adopted by Alwani (رح) in presenting Qur’anic coherence is not significantly different from that of the classical scholars. He relies on authentic traditions, the sayings of the Companions, and reliable reports concerning the occasions of revelation. Avoiding deviation and excess, Maulana Hussain Ali Alwani’s method in explaining the coherence and structure of the Qur’an appears highly cautious and balanced.
