This research study explores the diverse methodologies employed in Seerah literature from the earliest Islamic period to the contemporary era. The life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has remained the central source of guidance for Muslims, leading scholars across generations to document his Seerah using varied scholarly approaches shaped by their intellectual backgrounds, socio-political conditions, and methodological preferences. Early Seerah compilations, such as those of Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hisham, Waqidi, and Ibn Sa’d, were primarily narrative and tradition-based, focusing on collecting and preserving events without extensive critical analysis. During the classical period, Seerah writing evolved toward more analytical and evaluative methods, incorporating hadith criticism, legal reasoning, theological perspectives, and literary enrichment, as seen in the works of Ibn Kathir, Ibn Qayyim, Qadi ‘Iyad, and others. In modern times, Seerah literature has expanded significantly in response to Western academic challenges, colonial pressures, new intellectual trends, and evolving social contexts. Modern methodologies include defensive-apologetic approaches addressing orientalist critiques, thematic and analytical frameworks, comparative studies, socio-political interpretations, and scholarly attempts to align Seerah studies with contemporary research standards. Authors such as Shibli Nomani, Sulaiman Nadwi, Muhammad Hamidullah, Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri, and modern academic researchers have introduced innovative perspectives that highlight the Seerah’s relevance to current ethical, social, and global issues.
This study concludes that while Seerah writing has undergone considerable methodological transformation, the core objective remains unchanged: to present the Prophet’s life as an enduring model for humanity. A comprehensive, balanced, and academically rigorous methodology is essential for addressing present-day intellectual and societal challenges.
