Clothing is a basic necessity of human life. It not only provides physical covering and protection but also reflects civilization, modesty, dignity, and personality. In Islam, clothing is not introduced merely as a social or cultural practice, but as a moral and faith-based responsibility. The Qur’an and Sunnah outline clear principles of dress in order to preserve purity, modesty, and honor within individuals and society. The Qur’an associates clothing with covering, adornment, and piety, declaring that the best garment is “the garment of piety” (libās al-taqwā). Likewise, the Prophetic traditions emphasize moderation, simplicity, modesty, and the avoidance of arrogance or pride in dress. Specific guidelines and etiquettes have been established for both men and women, the observance of which ensures social harmony and moral integrity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarded clothing as a great blessing of Allah and encouraged gratitude for it, while strongly discouraging ostentation, arrogance, and garments of vanity.
In conclusion, Islam views clothing not merely as a means of covering the body, but as a comprehensive concept that refines both outward appearance and inner character. This study finds that adopting clothing in accordance with Islamic principles is essential for an individual’s spiritual, moral, and social development.
